Min-jun                There's a long line!

Tiffany                 This is a famous ride on Coney Island. Around 200,000 people ride the Ferris wheel every year.

Ayane                  That many? Wow!

Attendant            Welcome to the Wonder Wheel! Three people in the next car, please! Tiffany                  Who wants to come with Brandon and me?

Emma                  I do!

Tiffany                 Great. Ayane and Min-jun, you guys can take the car after us.

Min-jun                OK, sure.

Atendant             Please watch your step!

数や量を言える

Around 200,000 people ride the Ferris wheel every year.

毎年およそ20万人がこの観覧車に乗ります。

 

大きな数の言い方

ものごとを説明するとき、数字を使うとより明確に伝えることができます。この文は、 many people と言う代わりに around 200,000 peopleと具体的に言うことによっ て、観覧車の人気ぶりを伝えています。英語で「20万」と言うときは1,000が200 あると考えてtwo hundred thousandと言います。このように1,000を基準にして、 1万(10,000) は ten thousand、10万(100,000) は one hundred thousandと 言います。

もうひとつ桁が増えるとmillion を使います。100万がone million、1000万 はten million、1億は one hundred millionです。oneの代わりに冠詞aを使うこともあります。

10,000,000 ten million
