Woman               Hey, look! The woman sitting over there is Kisaragi Rio.

Man                     The famous fashion designer?

Woman               Yes. She is so talented! I saw her at a fashion show last year. She created a series of dresses with exquisite patterns.

Man                     What kind of patterns?

Woman               She said that Edo kiriko, or Japanese cut glass, inspired her designs. Man                     How interesting! Woman A lot of her clients are celebrities. She must be friends with Chef Lorenzo!

現在分詞: 動詞 + -ing 「...している」

The woman sitting over there is Kisaragi Rio.

あそこに座っている女性は、如月里央です。

 

現在分詞:動詞 + -ing 「...している」

<動詞+ -ing>は「...している」という意味で使われ、形容詞の性質を持ちます。この 文は、the woman (女性)で始まり、その女性がどのような人であるかを sitting over there(あそこに座っている)がうしろから説明しています。英語では、the woman (女性) sitting over there (あそこに座っている)という語順で、日本語と逆になることに注意しましょう。

なお、く動詞+ -ing〉を「現在分詞」と言います。

 

the woman                        sitting over there * sitの場合はtを重ねて -ingをつけます。

女性                                   あそこに座っている
